There’s something about Joshua Tree that feels almost otherworldly.

The textures, the muted tones, the quiet. Everything slows down. Light moves differently in the desert. Colors feel softer. Even the stillness has a kind of warmth to it.

This past February, I traveled to Joshua Tree for a creative retreat with other artists and photographers, spending the day documenting the landscape, details, and moments of inspiration in between. It wasn’t a traditional wedding or engagement session, but more of an opportunity to create freely and reconnect with the kind of imagery that first made me fall in love with photography.

And, honestly, it reminded me exactly why I’m so drawn to places like this.

I want to hear about your story. Let's create together!

A Landscape That Feels Made for Film

I’ve always been drawn to landscapes that feel a little cinematic and slightly untamed, and Joshua Tree somehow manages to feel both grounded and surreal at the same time. The faded earth tones, massive rock formations, dusty roads, dry air, harsh sunlight, every part of it feels textured in a way that translates beautifully through film photography.

And film was *always* going to be the medium. Nearly this entire retreat was photographed on 35mm and medium format film. Film just renders desert light differently than digital. There's no chimping the back of the camera after every frame, no instant reassurance.

There's presence. There's trust.

And that trust between photographer and subject is the exact energy I strive for with every couple when they're working with me.

What a Content Retreat Actually Is (And Why It Matters for Your Wedding Photos)

If you've landed here in your search for a photographer, you might not know what a content retreat even is.

You can think of it as a creative laboratory where you bring together models or real couples, scout a location with intention, and spend a full day creating images that reflect my style. Not just the "safe" shots, but the bold, the quiet, the unexpected. The images you see from a content retreat are a direct window into what I'll do for your day.

For you, as someone planning a wedding or elopement, this matters because it means the portfolio you're looking at is honest. These are the real colors, the real grain, the real light. This is what your gallery will look like.

The Location: Joshua Tree, California

We shot on the outskirts of Joshua Tree proper. Past the visitors' center crowds and further into the open desert where you can stand in the stillness and hear nothing but wind (and, it was a seriously windy day!).

For desert elopements in California or Joshua Tree wedding photography, this location is genuinely unmatched. The light shifts dramatically throughout the day, giving you a completely different landscape at golden hour than at midday, and both are stunning in their own way. We leaned into both.

If you're considering a Joshua Tree elopement, this is the kind of setting that requires zero decoration. The desert is the décor.

Sparkling silver bridal heels resting on warm desert sand, a film-toned wedding day detail.

The Style: Bold, True-to-Life, and Rooted in Film

My photography style isn't for everyone. I deliver is bold, colorful, and true to life. Images that look the way the moment actually felt. Saturated where it should be saturated. Textured with real film grain. Alive. Film captures that in a way that feels earned, not filtered. I'm making every frame count on that roll of 36.

This is what I want for every couple's wedding gallery, whether they're eloping in the California desert,  getting married in San Diego (and beyond), or doing an intimate ceremony somewhere secret and special to them.

For Engaged Couples: What This Means For You

If you're an engaged couple in San Diego and the surrounding area looking for a wedding photographer here's what this retreat is proof that:

  • I can work anywhere. San Diego beaches, mountain venues, desert landscapes California gives us *everything* and more.
  • Color is never the enemy. I will not make your wedding day look beige. Your dress, your flowers, and the sky all get to show up fully.
  • I slow down. That translates to your day feeling calm and unrushed, because I'm not running around spraying and praying. I'm present, and I make you feel that.
