There's a moment,
at the first look, in a quiet laugh between vows, or in the way two people hold each other at the end of the night, that no amount of planning can fully predict. It just happens. And in San Diego, the setting has a way of making those moments even more extraordinary.
The golden cliffs of Torrey Pines, the tide-worn coves of La Jolla, the rocky shoreline of Point Loma, and the wide-open sands of Coronado are just a few of the spots that make San Diego one of the most quietly beautiful places in the country to celebrate your love in whatever form that takes. Having a full wedding with your people gathered around you? There's a venue for that. An intimate elopement with just the two of you and the Pacific? Sunset awaits. An engagement session that actually feels like you and not a stock photo? I'll make sure of it. Between the crashing waves, ocean breeze, and golden California sunsets, there's a little something for everyone.
Something I love about photographing couples specifically along the coast line is the movement this environment just naturally brings to every image; wind catching your veil, hair blowing freely in the wind, or ocean breeze throwing salt into the air. All of these details culminate and create photographs that feel genuine and alive. And I ensure you're never feeling overly posed.
I keep coming back to my cover photo for this post, which I took during golden hour on a perfect stretch of the Southern California coastline. I asked my wonderful bride and groom to take a moment, be themselves and celebrate being MARRIED and in love. He lifted her, she laughed, and the sunlight hit in a way it only does during golden hour.
A note on how I work: I am both a digital and film photographer. In recent years, I've found myself reaching for my film cameras more often than not. There's a quality to film that digital simply cannot replicate with its grain and nostalgia. A ceremony portrait on film, an engagement session at dusk, a stolen glance between dances are the frames that feel different when you hold a print years from now. And for couples who love film photography, the coast is especially magical.
If I was left entirely to my own devices, I'd probably photograph every wedding on film. But the truth is that film and digital each bring something valuable to the story. Film gives me the texture and depth I love and need, while digital allows me to capture fleeting moments and document the day with confidence and consistency. This combo gives couples the best of both worlds (cue, Hannah Montana).
Trends come and go,
but the ocean will always remain. Long after the trends have retired and the algorithms have moved on, you'll remember the way your partner looked at you, the laughter that caught you off guard, and the moments that made the whole day feel wonderfully, uniquely yours.
If you're planning a wedding, elopement, or an engagement session in San Diego, the coast offers a beautiful place to create photographs that feel honest and romantic. If you're looking for an excuse to spend an evening by the ocean with your favorite person, me and my camera are ready to tag along.
